Holidays approach, needs are great

The economic recession has not only hit families, individuals, and businesses hard, but also those organizations and benefits that provide services and needs for those in need in our area.  The recession has created even a bigger burden, yet the various charitable organizations are getting less.

The Toys for Tots foundation serving the Chambersburg and Shippensburg areas, as well as the rest of Franklin County, estimate the need at 40,000 toys.

He estimates that Marine Corps Reserve volunteers are going to need about 40,000 toys to put toys under the tree and fill the stockings of the area’s needy children.

Last year, the Toy for Tots drive provided Christmas gifts for 5,500 area children. The Marine Corps Reserve inherited clients from the Franklin County Toy Mission following its demise.

“We are looking at a big increase in those numbers because of the economy and the rise in unemployment this year,” he said. “I’m asking the public to be generous and step up to the plate and help us.”

Knowing the state of the economy, we simply request from our customers and readers, if you can help, please do.  One or two toys from each of us can help make a difference.

The date is set for the Stewart Foundation Community Christmas dinner.

The annual Stewart Foundation Community Christmas Dinner will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 24 at the Shippensburg Firefighters Activities Center, 33 W. Orange Street.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and final meals will be served at 12:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required.

This meal is free for those who would be alone on Christmas as well as families who are financially unable to provide a holiday meal for themselves.

And here is some information on the annual Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program.

Proof of expenses can include phone and utility bills, car payments, car insurance, life insurance, cable and fuel or propane.

“We verify income and expenses to make sure there is a need,” said Pat Hughes, Chambersburg Salvation Army office manager.

According to Hughes, few applicants are turned away.

“We would encourage anyone who feels they are in need to come forward and apply,” Hughes said.

She believes there will be a significantly higher number of applicants this year, due to the economy, and would not want any family to delay asking for aid.

The assistance program provides families with Christmas dinner and toys for children younger than 12

Each of these drives and programs are awesome community based help and assistance.  If you can, if you have the ability, please help these wonderful assistance programs.

Thinking of the Veterans

From us here at ShipPet pet sitting, we want to extend out appreciation and gratitude to all those who served and are currently serving in the US Military.

Thank you for keeping this great nation safe. Each and every Vet is owed a debt if gratitude for their sacrifices.

Thinking of the passing generation

Since I blogged last here at ShipPet, I learned of the passing of two of Shippensburg unique and active community leaders.

Dr. George Rae passed away on October 30th.  Dr. Rae was one of those community leaders that helped found the Shippensburg Corn Festival, was very active in political party activities, and involved in many other civic activities like the Lions Club, Vigilant Hose, and the Shippensburg Historical Society.  George was one of the first people I met when I got married and moved to Shippensburg.  At the time, I was working for former State Rep. Jeffrey Coy and Dr. Rae was intimately involved in Shippesnburg politics, but not at the local elected level.  Wasn’t his style.  He was a long time committeeman that worked the party and his area hard, harder than many.  He truly believed in the democratic process.  He was a warm, welcoming soul and introduced me to the political scene in Shippensburg and helped get me elected twice, once to the Borough Council and once to the School Board.  I swear, I don’t think I ever saw Dr. Rae without a smile on his face.  He was a close friend to another man I admired and had profound respect for and has since passed away, Robert “Bob” Sullivan.

Galen ‘Tubb’ Smith passed away on October 27th.  Tubb was one of the co-founders of West End Fire and Rescue, involved in several other local emergency activities.  He was a dedicated, humble servant to fire and rescue in Shippensburg .   Tubb was also actively involved in the community and local political processes serving as party committeeman for several years.  I knew Tubb pretty well from the days I spent with former Rep. Coy.  His jokes never got old.  His humor was infectuous.  You could always count on Tubb, even on a bad day, to make you at least smirk a grin.   He is a man I will not forget.

Thinking about these two gentleman, makes me sit back and think about the generation that is quickly passing.  It was the great generation, a generation that fought World War II then came home and built the American Superpower.  All three of my Grandfathers were part of the terrific generation ( My Mom’s biological father, Maurice J. Ott was killed in action in WW II, 1944).  They contributed as much as anyone, providing the same hard work ethic and family driven attitudes that made  America great.

I look at my generation and the younger generations and hope and pray we can be at least 3/4 what the WWII generation was for our Nation.  Their passing quickly and these two gentleman were part of that great generation.  To them I say, thank you and God speed!  To those still alive, I say thank you for everything, you will never be forgotten, nor will your sacrifices.

Ship Animal Rescue takes over area Chambersburg area rescue

The Better Days Animal League in Shippensburg has taken over operations of Angel Hill Animal Sanctuary in Chambersburg. Angel Hill has had licensing and animal cruelty problems.

“Thanks to the combined efforts of Better Days Animal League, Wanda and Scott Davenport (of Angel Hill), Assistant District Attorney Bret Beynon and the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement, this agreement will take the facility in a productive direction for the welfare of the animals,” Martin said.

Better Days will continue to operate its Mongul Hill Road shelter, which is responsible for 225 animals, including many in foster care.

If you need or want a pet, please give your strongest consideration to adopting a pet without a home.
